I posted a D3 animation project on github that visualizes the successive locations of the biggest cities in the world over time: http://andi-g.github.com/cities/. You can move forward and backward in time by dragging the slider, or just see history unfold by watching the animation. The animation works best in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.
