Trees

I’ve started to work on a little project called Trees. I’m going to try to capture and convey as much as I can of what I experience when I’m close to them in the form of images. I really love being around trees and especially so in older woodlands, which provide a wider variety of growth patterns. Sometimes these images are dark, a bit mysterious, and moody. Sometimes they are light and breezy. I’ll start with two images I took last weekend in a park full of California oaks. Those are also the first color images I developed at home.

The first image was a scene I saw out of the corner of my eye in the distance between two trees. When I looked closer, the branches reminded me of arteries and the blueish color of the lichen produced a nice contrast to the more yellow leaves in the background, giving the image more depth than I expected. I also liked how Provia worked in this setting, even though the dynamic range was pushing the film to its limits.

The second image was taken earlier than the first one and even though the light was filtered heavily through the high clouds, it gave the scene more depth than I believed it could when I took it. I’m happy I captured the scene and that I used Ektar 100 for it, allowing for a higher dynamic range.
