These are privately run bridges across the Lilongwe river, connecting two parts of the old market in Lilongwe. You pay a small fee for the excitement of being on such a lofty construction and for the convenience of reaching the other side a bit more quickly as compared to walking all the way to the concrete bridge.
Down at the river people are washing their clothes and some put them on again right away, wet and everything.
